Pythagorean Development was founded by Rob Coker in 2001 as a consulting business. It specialized in applying advanced mathematical techniques to solve complex, real-world problems and then implementing those techniques in a well-documented, coherent software solution. Currently, Pythagorean Development is dormant.

Why the Name?

In retrospect, the name is a nuisance. It is long. It always requires being spelled out. When it is spelled out, it almost always requires help with pronunciation.

So why did I pick it?

First, I had to come up with some name. I’d been doing business as RCS but needed to incorporate and that name was taken in the state of Missouri. So, I had to find something else.

Pythagorean's Thereom

Geometric Proof of Pythagorean’s Thereom

Pythagoras was an ancient Greek mathematician, philosopher and musician. He was the discoverer of the theorem that says for a right triangle, the sum of the squares of the sides equals the square of the hypotenuse, or a2 + b2 = c2. Hence, that is known as Pythagorean’s theorem. He, in fact, believed that the world was composed of numbers and had significant philosophical writings. In music, he discovered the ratios of length in a string to create an octave, a fourth, and a fifth. This is critical in creating stringed instruments.

I like math a lot and most of the software I write (but not all) is mathematical in nature. I like music a lot as well and frequently wish I could do it professionally, but that hasn’t turned out yet. I actually went into electrical engineering so that I could design guitar signal processors. Modeling the non-linearities of vacuum tube guitar amps is what my Master’s thesis was about. Right after I finished my undergrad, I decided to study philosophy for a while myself to have a better foundation for many things I was inclined already to believe.

So, I have a lot of the same interests as Pythagoras, even though I don’t agree with many of his philosophical conclusions, and I’m involved in software and systems development – thus, Pythagorean Development.
